Abstract: We collect microscopic images of Permian volcanolithic fragment bearing sandstones in the southwestern China and establish a microscopic image dataset. This paper gives a brief description to this microscopic image dataset and introduces the lithic characteristics of representative micro images. Zeiss polarizing microscope (Zeiss) with camera system was used to observe and photograph sandstone thin sections. This microscopic image dataset contains 318 microphotographs from 43 medium-grained sandstones. Based on micro textures and detrital components, the analyzed sandstones are divided into five categories, which are lithic, feldspatho-lithic, litho-feldspathic, quarto-lithic and litho-quartzose sandstones. This image dataset can be used as a guide for future research on sandstone microscopic observation, classification and modal composition. This dataset can also be used as a standard reference for digitization and auto identification of sandstone petrofacies, providing a basis for accurate digital identification of sandstone features in the future.
