Bamo Qubumen

Born in the Cold Mountains, Sichuan, China, Qubumo Bamo comes from the Nuosu, a subgroup of the Yi people. She obtained her Ph.D. in Folkloristics at Beijing Normal University. She has been a staff member at Institute of Ethnic Literature (IEL), Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) since 1988, where she currently acts as Director of Oral Traditions Research Center and Associate Editor-in-Chief of the journal Studies of Ethnic Literature, holding concurrent positions as Vice President of the China Folklore Society, Vice President of the China Ethnic Literature, the Secretary-General of the International Society for Epic Studies amongst other specialized appointments.
Bamo has conducted a long-term field study on verbal dueling and epic tradition in her hometown. In addition to her path-breaking works on the Yi's archaic poetics and ritualized literature, she has published almost 150 articles in the field of folklore studies, oral epic tradition, and intangible cultural heritage (ICH) in China and beyond. Her honors include a Harvard-Yeching Fellowship and several CASS-Level awards for achievements in scientific research.
As a full professor of Folkloristics at the Department of Ethnic Minority Literature of the University of CASS since 2003, Bamo has lectured on a wide range of topics in the discipline, recently concentrated in ICH safeguarding practices, international cultural policies and sustainable development, and documentation-in-process questions for ensuring the viability of living heritage.
Working in the application of ICT for developing expertise and scholarship in oral tradition, Bamo has been the curator of China Ethnic Literature Network (CELN) and of China Folklore Network (CFN) since 2003; she currently serves as Member of the National Technical Committee 554 on Intellectual Property Knowledge Management Standardization Administration of China (SAC/TC 554) and Member of the National Technical Committee 394 on Culture and Art Resources Management Standardization Administration of China (SAC/TC 394), as well as the principal investigator on the key project for Developing Metadata Standards for Documenting and Archiving China Ethnic Minority Oral Traditions, sponsored by National Funds of Social Sciences.
Since 2007, Bamo has been active in the China Delegation to statutory meetings and events under the 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage and served as a leading expert on the tie between the ICH and cultural policymaking with her following-up engagement at local, national, and international levels, thereby providing consultant and training services for diverse stakeholders concerned.
