Abstract & Keywords
Abstract: Type specimens are the basis of the publication of new species and are of great significance in taxonomy and related scientific research. This dataset summarizes, verifies, and determines the animals’ type specimens in Shennongjia, Hubei Province, China, based on the book Catalogue of the Animal Type Specimens Deposited in Shennongjia and the series of books Catalogue of the Insect Type Specimens Deposited in China (Volumes 1, 2, 3). The dataset covered 915 animal species including type specimens collected from Shennongjia area (3 phylums, 8 classes, 31 orders and 187 families). Meanwhile, 14 species that used to be identified as ineffective specimens were specifically compiled. In this dataset, each record covered availability and classification information of corresponding species, number of type specimens (i.e., holotype, allotype and paratype), collection location, collection time, specimen storage location in the original literature, whether the specimens were merely from Shennongjia, reference materials and remarks. This dataset effectively supported the related taxonomy and scientific research, and hopefully it can provide a scientific basis for animal protection work, Hubei Province, in the near future.

Dataset compositionThis data consisted of 929 records, including: (1) 915 animal species which type specimens collected from Shennongjia area, belonging to 3 phylums, 8 classes, 31 orders and 187 families; (2) 14 species that used to be identified as ineffective specimens were specifically compiled. The data also consisted of 31 parts, respectively was: species number, species availability, phylum, phylum Latin name, class, class Latin name, order, order Latin name, family, family Latin name, genus Latin name, species Chinese name, species Latin name; type specimens number, gender, collection location, collection time, the specimen storage location in the original literature (i.e., holotype, allotype and paratype, respectively); whether the specimens are only from Shennongjia area, reference materials and remarks.
